Dr. Eva was kindly asked to ecucate solicitors at Mason Hayes & Curran solicitors about healthy eating on the go. The company are taking great measures to improve the health of their employees and are currently taking part in the happy heart initiative. Obesity levels since 1990 have increased from 8% to 26% in men, and from 13% to 21% in women. With 24% of our population obese and 37% overweight it is definitely a topic which we should not be taking lightly!
A lot of people think that the purpose of a diet is to lose weight but ultimately the goal of a healthy diet is to maintain or improve health. In the short-term it can help us to feel good and have increased energy levels and in the long-term it reduces our risk of heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and some cancers. A helathy diet is a combination of several different types of foods- from each of the main food groups- in the right amounts so your body gets all the nutrients it needs while maintaining a healthy weight. We could all do with improving our diets and it seems there is a lot of conflicting advice around at the moment.
At the end of the day it comes down to planning, portion control, eating regularly etc. It is important to put effort into your healthy eating plan to make it varied and interesting so that you do not rely on convenience food. At the end of the day "Health is not just a state of absence of disease but a state of general well being". And calories do count: there are some lucky people who do not have to count their money but everybody has to count their calories! Take your diet into your own hands and start looking after yourself.
