Syndrome X or Metabolic Syndrome

Syndrome X or Metabolic Syndrome is the name given to a cluster of health conditions – including excess abdominal obesity, elevated fasting triglyceride levels, raised blood pressure, high fasting glucose and low levels of HDL cholesterol – that occur together, increasing you risk of heart disease and other health problems such as diabetes and stroke.

What is Syndrome X?

Syndrome X or Metabolic Syndrome is the name given to a cluster of health conditions – including excess abdominal obesity, elevated fasting triglyceride levels, raised blood pressure, high fasting glucose and low levels of HDL cholesterol – that occur together, increasing you risk of heart disease and other health problems such as diabetes and stroke.

Having just one of these conditions doesn’t mean you have Syndrome X, however a person with any three of the five conditions outlined above would be classified as having Syndrome X.
What causes Syndrome X?

Syndrome X is closely linked to overweight, obesity and inactivity.

Syndrome X is associated with insulin resistance.  In an individual with insulin resistance, the body’s cells don’t respond to insulin and therefore glucose can’t enter the cells as easily. As a result glucose levels in the blood will rise although the body is attempting to control glucose by producing additional insulin.

Syndrome X and Diabetes?

Syndrome X is a mild form of diabetes or a condition that creates similar consequences. The main difference between Syndrome X and diabetes is that with Syndrome X the body produces excess insulin that compensates and suppresses the typical indicators used to identify diabetes. Therefore it is very likely that a person suffering from Syndrome X will develop Type 2 diabetes.

Treatment?

Research has shown that within 11 weeks of a lifestyle change including improving diet, losing excess weight and increasing activity levels, some of the damage done to the arteries in the heart and brain will start reversing.

So it is never too late to start making changes and here at Orsmond Clinics we can help you achieve weight loss, develop a healthy balanced diet and overall reduce your risk of developing Syndrome X.
